Keys To The Growth of True Democratic Spirit

There are steps to achieve in the growth of a true democratic spirit. Often challenging, the path towards democratic spirit is not easy, but can be very rewarding when reached. Characterized by a respect for the right of others to exist in and of themselves, a commitment to civil and human rights, and a willingness to take political responsibility through voting and political action all characterize the democratic spirit.

The right of others to exist as they see fit, insofar as they do not violate any laws or legislation governing the polity is not to be taken lightly. There is something in human beings that recoils at difference, be it difference in faith, difference in sexuality, differences in race, lifestyle, diet or culture. For millenia, human beings have sought to stamp out difference wherever possible; yet, the advent of democracy in the Western world has led to an increased tolerance for difference. This tolerance shows in our attitudes towards our neighbors and fellow citizens: they need not be exactly like ourselves, and have a right to exist as they please.

Political responsibility is reserved for the individual, and voting is a sacred right that citizens hold dear. Voting knowledgeably on issues and candidates is a function of the democratic spirit.
